Treasured Possession

“You have today declared the Lord to be your God, and that you would walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments and His ordinances, and listen to His voice.  The Lord has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments.”

Deuteronomy 26:17-18

Three thousand years ago Moses stood before thousands of his fellow Israelites and proclaimed these words of encouragement. They were God’s treasured possession! Soon they were to enter the land of milk and honey for which they had been promised. Once there they would encounter embedded tribes with far superior weapons and overwhelming numbers. In order to overcome and drive out the Canaanites, they would need to rely solely upon the help from the Lord whom they were declaring to be their God in this passage.

Though it is true that these words were penned long ago, they ring truer today than ever. We, the church, the “called out” ones, the modern Israel for which God yearns to fellowship and call His own, are making the same declaration; that we will walk according to the will of God with the mind of Christ, that we will keep His commandments, practice His ordinances and listen to His still, quiet voice within us. For we are His treasured possession, His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10), a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9) called to live out His will and proclaim His word to the same dark, hopeless world that existed during the time of Moses.

Let me remind you that when we profess Jesus as our Lord and Savior we declare a covenant to follow Him all the days of our lives. Like the Israelites before us, we are called to a task that is far greater than we are, but with the help of the Lord we will conquer and possess. May these words of Moses be an encouragement to you as you continue on your walk with the Lord as His treasured possession.

In Christ,

Dave
