It’s obvious the title of this book reveals the content hidden within. It is a book about the background of a well-known atheist, his debate tactics, and the events which led up to his doctrinal metamorphosis. It is a book rich in philosophical thought and skeptical challenges. It is, in a nutshell, a story of a real-life man whose views of God and the purpose of life transformed over time.
Antony Flew was a well-known English philosopher who died in 2010. He was a staunch critic of religions, especially those of the Christian faith. During his lifetime he wrote extensive papers refuting the tenants of Christianity. He was featured in many prominent televised debates between Christian apologists and atheists/agnostics.
Flew was born into a Christian family, his father was a Methodist preacher. He learned church doctrine in his early childhood being enrolled in one of the most prestigious Christian boarding schools in England. In his teenage years, he began questioning many of the pillars of Christianity knowing in the back of his mind that he would disappoint his parents once he left the house. After high school, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and became an intelligence officer. After World War II he earned his doctor’s degree in philosophy and worked as a professor in various prominent English and American colleges, holding several chair positions within them.
Flew practiced the Socratic principle that he “would go wherever the facts led him.” It turns out that the facts eventually led him to faith in Christ! This book reveals the many twists and turns and influencers that led him to this newfound faith.
Several tenants of the Christian faith are dissected and explored within this book which can only strengthen the up-and-coming apologists who read it. It is deep, logical, and interesting to get into the mind of a genius like Flew. There are a few places where the author (Roy Varghese) diverts and adds fluff but it is also encouraging to see where the logic and reasoning take you. I give this book a 4.5 out of 5.0 and highly recommend it for new Christians seeking validation of their faith.
