Book Review: The Last Arrow by Erwin Raphael McManus

Erwin McManus is the founder and pastor of Mosaic Church headquartered in downtown Los Angeles. Mosaic is a non-denominational, worldwide network of churches with a vision to reach the lost through unconventional expressions of love, faith and hope. According to McManus, that vision originated with the body of disciples after the resurrection of Jesus. McManus, a flamboyant, no-holds-barred preacher, models that vision perfectly and his church has led thousands across the world to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

McManus has authored many other books (The Artisan Soul, The Barbarian Way and Chasing Daylight to name a few of the most popular ones), all with the underlying theme to live your life unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He promotes stretching yourself beyond the self-imposed limitations you may unconsciously set for yourself. Go outside the box, act a little eccentric, maybe even go as far as to embarrass yourself for Jesus! This is unabashed love for Jesus, and he may be right in many ways. There are lots of believers who are held back from proclaiming their love for Christ by self-imposed limitations that prohibit them from ever sharing their faith. It is these believers who McManus targets in this book.

The title, The Last Arrow, references the short story of Elisha and King Jehoash found in 2 Kings 13:14-20. In this story, Elisha asked King Jehoash to take an arrow and strike the ground. The King strikes the ground three times. Elisha gets mad because he believes the King’s faith in the power of God is too shallow. He believes the King should have struck the ground five or six times. Because he didn’t the King will not experience the victory over Aram he had hoped for. The underlying theme, according to McManus, is that the King’s petty faith was a reflection of his shallow relationship with the Creator of the known universe.

McManus shares several personal life experiences that builds his case for living your life out loud, with unrestrained faith and hope. He encourages believers to think big, to pray for the impossible and to live as if God’s got your back. His intention is to make sure we empty our quiver of arrows before we breathe our last breath here on earth.

I like McManus’ style of writing because it’s real. What I mean by that is that he writes as if he’s speaking directly to you. It’s not elegant or sophisticated, just real.

This is a good book, one that will encourage you in your walk with Jesus. It’s a good book to give to your non-believing friends. It’s also a good book to give to your believing friends! I give it a 4.5 out of 5.0.
