Book Review: The Shepherd as Preacher: Delivering God’s Word with Passion and Power by John MacArthur
John MacArthur is not really the author, per se, of this book because it is a compilation of seminar speeches and sermons from various pastors and leaders who spoke at the annual Shepherd’s Conference held at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, over the years. Speakers included famous theologians such as R.C. Sproul, Albert Mohler, Jr. and Rick Holland. They’re all well-established pastors and leaders in the field of pastoring.
The chapters of speeches are very good and enlightening just as if you were sitting in a pew listening to them speak. They cover a variety of topics from living out the Christian life, heeding the voice of God, preparing impactful sermons and exposing the hidden gems so often hidden in the Scriptures. They all do an excellent job at motivating the reader to walk in righteousness and serve God in their daily lives.
Several of the chapters were eye-opening to me because I was exposed to some expository teachings I wasn’t aware existed in certain passages. That’s always a good thing because we all know the Bible is a minefield of divine wisdom begging us to excavate its invaluable treasures. I believe you, too, will receive a tremendous blessing with some of the things the authors reveal that you can apply to your life as you continue to seek God’s guidance and direction.
The book is well written and easy to read. Although the title seems to be limiting the audience to just pastors, the book is really for anyone desiring a closer walk with God. It’s packed full of theology and wise suggestions to live the Christian life. It’s not long or boring and will keep you captivated. It was a hard book to put down and I thoroughly enjoyed its content. I believe you will too, so I give this book a 5.0 out of 5.0 for both content and ease of reading.
