Book Review: Lessons From A Sheep Dog by Phillip Keller

Life can often become complicated simply because we make it that way.  However, it doesn’t have to always be like that. We can choose to not let “life” get at us by trusting more in the Lord and realizing that life is short and meant to be enjoyed in the peace and serenity of knowing its Creator.  I stumbled across this book by accident while I was looking up another book online.  The title caught my eye, so I delved into its reviews which prompted me to purchase it.  I definitely was not disappointed!

It is only 73 pages long and can probably be read by most people in an hour or two.  I read it straight through because I couldn’t put it down!  I found it intriguing, to say the least, because there isn’t an ounce of fluff in it.  Everything Keller has to say is said concisely, pointedly and with deep conviction.  I discovered it is true that everything you need to know about being a Christian can be found by observing a dog (of all things)!

Keller uses several biblical references to make seven distinct points about living a life for Christ.  Point one, entitled “In the Wrong Hands,” starts off by talking about a sheepdog that he purchased from an elderly retired lady who did not have the time or money to invest in him. The dog was in the wrong hands until he found his new home on a sheep ranch.  Keller likens this to the fact that before we become believers we are in the wrong hands of Satan being manipulated, abused and mistreated.  Until we become a child of the King we are not able to live our life as it was designed to be lived.  A poignant point to say the least!

The remaining six points have simple titles and are also supported by bible references.  They are:

  • “Set Free to Follow”
  • “Learning to Trust”
  • “The Delight of Obedience”
  • “The Test of Faithfulness”
  • “Love and Discipline”
  • “Available for Anything”

As you can probably deduce, this entire book is a reminder that being a Christian is a simple mandate to live our lives in obedience to our Master.  Like the sheep dog, that task is made easier when we trust and love the Master.

This is a moving book and one I will keep in my library and reread sometime down the road of life.  I give it a 4.5 out of 5.0 and highly recommend it to everyone looking for peace in life. Like being a sheep dog, it requires faithfulness, obedience, and love for the Master.

Lessons from a Sheep Dog: A True Story of Transforming Love
By Phillip Keller

What you see is not always what you get – and this true story of a man and his dog is no exception. Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheep dog – not terribly unlike how God’s love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom. Allow yourself to see Biblical truth in this classic tale of what can happen when you yield to the Master.
