Augustine for Armchair Theologians

Book Review: Augustine for Armchair Theologians by Stephen A. Cooper

I love the “Armchair” series of books because they are written by experts at a reading level novices like me can enjoy and understand. They provide accurate, concise and witty overviews of some of the most prominent theologians who have helped build the Christian church we know today. In my opinion, every person who is curious and serious about studying the bible and church history should own this series.

In this book, Stephen Cooper provides an overview of one of the greatest theologians of the early church: Augustine of Hippo. Augustinian philosophy has had a major influence in the history of Christianity and his Confessions has long been regarded as one of Christianity’s classic texts. Cooper introduces the life and thought of Augustine through discussing the Confessions and shows how many of Augustine’s human struggles are still with us today. He also examines the theological views of Augustine that emerged through the important controversies of his times.

What I like best about this book is that it allowed me to penetrate into the inner life of a great Christian and to discover that in many ways he’s no different than myself. It exposes the antagonizing inner struggles Augustine experienced, the relational conflicts he had with his mother and friends, and the facts leading up to his decision to surrender all he had to follow his one love, Jesus Christ.

It is both easy and fun to read.  I give it a 4.0 out of 5.0 and recommend it highly.
