Book Review: Lead… for God’s Sake! by Todd G. Gongwer

Lead for God's Sake

I was given this book by a friend when I expressed to him how frustrated I was with the Head Coach of our football team’s lack of leadership. Interestingly enough, my friend didn’t give me any advice, he just gave me this book and said read it.

The book is written as a story, a parable of sorts. It’s about a basketball coach who was a Kentucky legend at Franklin North High School. Coach Steve Rocker had brought his team to the state championship twice in the past two years, but presently was struggling to make it to the playoffs. His current students weren’t like his previous students. Their work ethic, attitudes, and all-out effort were below his expectations. To motivate them he did what most coaches do, he imposed harder drills, yelled at their incompetence and punished those who didn’t comply. As expected, this type of “motivation” wasn’t working. In fact, it was only adding stress to Coach Rocker’s life.

It wasn’t working until the day he met the school janitor, Joe Taylor. Joe was a quiet, behind-the-scenes type of person who at first seemed not to be the type of guy who was qualified to give any coaching advice. But as Steve began to delve into Joe’s past he discovered something unique and exciting. He began to discover Jesus and slowly started to implement a “new” way of coaching, one that immediately produced the results the coach was looking for.

There’s more to this story, but I can’t reveal it without spoiling the plot. There’s definitely a major twist towards the end that will captivate the reader. This book will move you emotionally and spiritually as it reveals biblical directives we all should be using in our lives as Christians. I can say this, that after reading this book I realized there were areas in my own life that could use a little Jesus infusion.

I am very fortunate and grateful that my friend gave me this book. It is a book I will keep in my library to reread again in the future. It’s an easy read that’s hard to put down (I read it in two days!).  I definitely rate it 5.0 out of 5.0!
