Book Review: Unafraid by Carey Scott
I had never heard of Carey Scott before I read this book, so the first thing I did was research her a little bit. In addition to being an author, Carey is a public speaker and certified Biblical Life Coach (Life Breakthrough Coach). I went to her website and read her “what I believe” statements. Her theology (and also that of the academy through which she received the coaching certification) sounded solid so I plunged head first into reading the book.
Unafraid is her most recent book. Her other titles include Uncommon, Untangled, and How God Grows a Courageous Girl (scheduled to be released 10/01/2019). This book, like the others in her “Un-“ series, is geared toward women. It focuses on who you are in Christ and on being authentic in a healthy and balanced way. The book goes into detail on what Carey means by being authentic.
Each chapter in this book begins with a quote. Two quotes that jumped out at me the most were:
The book is written in an easy-to-read conversational style. Carey includes many stories from the Bible and also from her own life and experiences as a woman and mother. She provides ample scripture to support her points. Most chapters end with questions and space to write in answers which help the reader to think through and develop applications for their own life.
Carey uses the phrase “grit and grace” profusely throughout the book. It was used a little overboard for me, but by the end I would smile and shake my head every time I read those words. I assume they are probably a part of her regular conversational style. She does define what she means by both those terms.
Carey uses the following acrostic for “Authentic” to lay out nine ways to find the confidence we need to live authentically:
A – Accept your Awesomeness
U – Unearth the Untruths
T – Try Loving Everyone
H – Hold on to Hope
E – Embrace and Extend Forgiveness
N – Never Shrink Back
T – Trample the Negatives
I – Invest in Community
C – Camp in the Word of God
My main take away after reading the book is that living authentically basically means we always believe God all the time and in every situation. It means we believe we are who He says we are, and we also believe that God is who He says He is. A key to this is also understanding who the real enemy is.
I really like that she wraps the book up by encouraging the reader to dive into the Word of God themselves and not be lazy, relying solely on others to feed us our daily bread (Matthew 6:11). She puts it this way:
She also points out the danger in blindly following what others, even prominent “spiritual leaders,” tell you what God says in the Bible without validating by reading yourself.
Carey stated one thing in this book that I had not ever thought about or studied fully. She states that the enemy cannot read your mind (only God can) and suggests speaking out loud to command Satan in Jesus name to leave you alone as he has no authority over us as God’s children (Luke 10:19). She bases this on 1 Kings 8:39.
I give this book a full 5.0 out of 5.0. It is chock full of Bible verses, biblical stories and sound theology which will encourage all women to live their best life possible for Christ. I have already purchased one of her other books, Uncommon, and am halfway through it.
