10 Prayers Based on God’s Word that Mothers can Pray
Speaking to our heavenly Father, our Creator and Sustainer, is a wonderful privilege not to be taken lightly. If we are to be obedient to God, then prayer must be a part of our life (Romans 12:12, Colossians 4:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer is a form of worship. It is an opportunity for us to confess our sins and present our requests to God. God loves us and wants to commune with us through prayer.
One way to pray is to base your words on Scripture. How fitting to apply God’s inspired words personally and to direct them to Him! Below are 10 bible verses that are great ones for mothers to use in their conversations with God.
1) Psalm 139:14
Sometimes as mothers, always focused on meeting the needs of others, we lose sight of how special we are in God’s eyes. This is a good verse to remind us that God made us just the way He planned, including for the special purpose of nurturing, guiding and instructing our children.
“I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.” – Psalm 139:14
2) Joshua 1:9
As a mother, it can be easy to lose courage and feel weak. When our children, and life in general, aren’t going as planned we can become dismayed. This verse is a good prayer as a reminder that God is the source of our strength and courage and is always with us. While it is not worded to be repeated verbatim, it can easily be personalized.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
Prayer: God, I know you are always with me. Help me to be strong and courageous and draw my strength from you.
3) 1 Peter 3:3-4
When you are chasing little ones around trying to get them ready to go out the door, there is little time to focus on your own appearance. Prayers based on these verses are a helpful reminder that our outward appearance is not as important as what is in our heart.
“Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.“ – 1 Peter 3:3-4
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me to remember that my adornment must not be merely external. A gentle and quiet spirit is what is precious in your sight.
4) 1 Timothy 3:11
Part of prayer is confession and asking for God’s help to obey His word and live the life He desires. This verse is a good reminder to not gossip and to be faithful to all of God’s commandments. Gossiping not an issue for you? Substitute any appropriate word in the reworded prayer below.
“Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.” – 1 Timothy 3:11
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be faithful to you in all things. I confess that I have been a malicious gossip and sinned against you.
5) Psalm 51:1-2
Along with confession comes repentance. Confess your sins to God, repent and seek His forgiveness. This verse is a good one that can be quoted directly.
“Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” – Psalm 51:1-2
6) Psalm 19:14
Do you ever find yourself saying something and then immediately wish you hadn’t? That has happened to me way more times than I’d like to even think about. Do you find yourself worrying or “meditating” on things that are not pleasing to God? This verse is another one to directly request in prayer.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.“ – Psalm 19:14
7) Psalm 25:4
Facing a tough decision? Uncertain which path to take? Everyone has questions like that. As mothers, multiply that by 100! Use words straight from the bible to cry out to God for direction.
“Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.“ – Psalm 25:4
8) Psalm 27:1
Are there people or places you dread going? Are there situations you fear being in? Remember that God is bigger than all your fears and all of your foes. We don’t have to face the day in our own strength.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?” – Psalm 27:1
Prayer: Lord, You are my light and my salvation. You are my defense. There is no situation I will face today that you can’t handle.
9) 1 Peter 5:7
Anxiety? As mothers, we never have anxiety… yeah, right! Everything from trying to get everyone where they need to be on time, concerns if our child is developing at the pace that is expected, holding our breath as they take the car out by themselves for the first time… the list goes on and on.
“Casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
Prayer: God, I cast all of my anxiety on You. Thank you for caring so much for me.
10) Proverbs 22:6
One of the most, actually I say THE MOST, important role as a mother is teaching our children about Jesus, His love, and His saving grace. Training our children in righteousness comes with a promise. This verse does not mean that your child will never sin or stray in his life, but God’s Word does not return void (Isaiah 55:11)
“Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, guide me as a raise my child and train him in the way he should go. I pray that he live a life holy and pleasing to You.
These verses are just a small sampling of the beautiful and powerful words found in Scripture. I encourage you to read the Bible and spend time in prayer daily. As you read God’s Word and come across verses that speak what is in your heart, pray them direct to God. As mothers, we don’t have to rely on ourselves and our own strength.
