Putting God in a Box

“Am I a God who is near,” declares the Lord, “And not a God far off?  Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord. – Jeremiah 23:23-24

I do not understand why, but oftentimes I witness people putting God in a box; that is, they put limits on His being, on WHO He is. Perhaps you’ve witnessed it and, like me, ponder why someone would want to worship a God limited by their own imagination?

As an engineer, I understand wanting to try and “figure Him out,” I understand wanting to make logical sense out of His being. However, if I can fully comprehend my God, then He is no bigger than my finite mind, and that would not be a God worth worshipping!

Some believe God is imminent, meaning He has vacated heaven to come here on earth and inhabit the heart of every soul.

Others believe He is transcendent, that He’s way out there, perhaps too far to hear our prayers.

We’re not the only enlightened ones who have pondered this paradox, for long ago this question was asked by one of the most dedicated, most revered and most respected Old Testament prophets, the prophet Jeremiah. In addressing false prophets of his day, Jeremiah warned that God is both near and far, that He is aware of their every deviant word that utters from their mouths.

God is omnipresent. He is present EVERYWHERE at all times. He reigns in heaven and walks the earth. There is nowhere you can roam and be beyond His reach.

God is omnipotent. He has unlimited power. He created our world and sustains it. He is capable of doing anything that He desires.

God is omniscient. He knows EVERYTHING. He knows every word you speak, every thought you have. He knows the past, the present, and the future.

To sum things up, God is the Maker of heaven AND earth and, although our feeble minds may not be able to perceive it, He lives and thrives in both places. HE IS GOD! And, like Jeremiah, I’m quite satisfied knowing that He is here and there, that He hears my prayers and watches over me here on earth and that He is waiting for me in heaven. I wouldn’t want it any other way. How about you?

In Christ,

Dave

Questions to Ponder:

1. Research the three Greek words for love and see which of these Jesus used in John 21:15-17. Which did Peter respond with? And why did Jesus ask Peter three times if he loved him?

2. In Galatians 4:24 the apostle Paul interprets a famous Old Testament story allegorically. Why? Is it ok to interpret some of the Old Testament stories allegorically? What was the purpose for which Paul interpreted it?

3. How does the story of the Exodus relate to your own personal journey of salvation?
