Book Review: Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper

The title of this book piqued my interest when I first received it from a friend in my monthly book club. I mean, who wants to waste their life? In addition, the author, John Piper, is an icon in the Christian realm, one who has pretty much established his rank among the faithful and true preachers of this day. These two incentives drove me to read this book.

I haven’t read many John Piper books and so I was fairly unfamiliar with his style. I quickly discovered he likes to expound excessively on a subject. Where he wrote ten pages, he could have easily written two paragraphs. Although what he has to say is spot on theologically, he wastes a lot of paper and ink to say it. I soon discovered the entire book is written like this.

His point in writing this book is summed up in the title. He drives the point home that we are all destined to die sometime and have an allotted amount of time to “do the work of the Lord.” He’s right, we do, and our time on this earth is predetermined by God, a fact he emphasizes to motivate us to live for Christ on a daily basis. We are commanded by Christ to reflect the image of our Creator in our lifestyle and to speak to others about the Good News of the saving power of Jesus Christ. These two things we should reflect on every day of our lives and ask ourselves are we living up to the expectations of God our Father?

Two things Piper stresses in this book that we should all exercise. One is reading the Bible, God’s inerrant and infallible Word. The other is constant prayer. These two practices, when done each day and combined with the power of the Holy Spirit within us, will drive and guide our lives to carry out what God requires of us all. The body is weak, but the spirit within us all is strong, and it is this entity of our very being that Piper appeals to. Fervent communion with God’s Spirit and His Word will keep our eyes on Christ and energize us all to do the work of the Lord.

This is a good book and one I’d recommend giving to friends and even unbelievers. I rate it fairly low, not because of its content, but because it at times seems repetitive and monotonous. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.0.
