Most Americans are familiar with Dr. Ben Carson and his work as a talented neurosurgeon at John Hopkins Medical Center. He currently serves on President Trump’s cabinet as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He is also a Seventh Day Adventist who practices his faith openly and unashamedly.
This is the third New York Times best-selling book that Dr. Carson has written (the others are Gifted Hands and America the Beautiful). He is a prolific writer that employs storytelling to captivate his audiences. His past is filled with life-altering experiences where God has certainly sculpted him into the man he is today.
This book is an assembly of Dr. Carson’s assessment of how we as a nation can become more unified. It is filled with practical wisdom he has used in his own life to unify people and communities he has personally been involved in. He starts off by exposing the absurdity of political correctness and how that movement has paralyzed America. He then shares common sense tactics like listening with intent and trying to understand different viewpoints other people may have without judging them. He exposes examples of elitism, racism, and bigotry that we are all familiar with in the political arena. He concludes that these practices, when combined together, contribute to the division our country is experiencing in today’s environment.
What I consider the best part of the book is the second half where he provides a multitude of practical solutions to the problems he presents in the first half. What may seem like his own personal resolutions are really Biblical mandates given by God in the Bible. He begins every chapter with a quote from the book of Proverbs and then expounds upon that verse as to how it can be employed in all of our lives. These proposals are both practical and easy to practice if we allow God to work in our lives.
This book is an easy read. It is common sense mixed with Biblical wisdom all wrapped up in one book. If the entire populace of the U.S. would read this book our nation’s division would be a thing of the past. It is a good book to give as a gift because the message is powerful. I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
