Book Review: The Normal Christian Life by Watchman Nee

This is not the first book I’ve read that was written by Watchman Nee. It’s more like the tenth one! After reading The Spiritual Man (all 3 volumes!) I was totally impressed with the writing style and content that Watchman produced. If you’re looking to be enlightened, encouraged and enriched in Christian living, I highly recommend reading this and any other book he wrote.

Watchman Nee

For those who may not know who Watchman Nee was let me give a quick synopsis of his bio. Nee was born in 1903 and raised as a Methodist by his parents in China. He became a converted and deeply devoted Christian in 1922 after visiting a Christian Conference in Europe. From 1923 to 1952 he dedicated his life to planting and growing churches. During the Communist Revolution (1952) he was imprisoned for his faith and spent the last 20 years of his life in jail where he died in 1972. It was during his prison sentence that he produced most of his now-famous commentaries on Scripture (talk about Romans 8:28!) and Christian living.

The Normal Christian Life

The Normal Christian Life is actually a compilation of Watchman’s personal correspondences compiled by a British evangelist named Angus Kinnear. It is 294 pages long (original publication) and covers a plethora of theological subjects like the blood of Christ, the cross of Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, the characters of God and the workings of the spirit, soul, and body within man. In the midst of these topics, Nee introduces many easy-to-understand analogies and down-to-earth illustrations that are sure to shed the light on several deep theological facts.

The book is easy to read, yet deep in content. There are paragraphs that you will definitely read more than once. And you will also need to have a highlighter handy. It is a book for the experienced Christian, yet simple enough to give to a newborn brother or sister in Christ. If you are looking for a leisurely commentary read of the entire Bible, I would highly recommend this book. It will surely strengthen your relationship and walk with the Lord Jesus and boost your Christian life.

This book is certainly a 5-star read!
