Book Review: Too Busy Not to Pray by Bill Hybels

This best-selling book (over 1 million copies sold) is a compilation of Bill Hybels’ sermons on the importance of prayer in a believer’s life. It stemmed from his admission of a need to instill discipline in his own personal prayer life. When putting his sermon series together, Pastor Hybels says he spent months on his knees and in his study chair seeking everything he could on the subject of prayer. The final result is written on the pages in this book.

I first want to say that I thoroughly enjoy reading any book Hybels publishes. His style of writing is smooth, organized and easy to digest as a reader. It simply is both enjoyable and interesting. He is not only a pastor and leader but an accomplished author as well and it shows in all his books.

Hybels covers all the questions one may have about prayer. Why pray if God is an all-knowing God? What does prayer accomplish in a believer’s life? Why doesn’t God answer my prayers? What role does faith have in prayer? How does one go about praying? I must admit that I, too, asked many of these questions and Hybels sets forth some sound, biblical answers that satisfied my inquisitiveness on the subject.

The title of the book is catchy, yet guilt-wrenching at the same time. We are all given 24 hours a day. What we choose to do with our time is solely up to us. We can rationalize that we don’t have time to pray, but in the long run, we all know that it’s not the lack of time, but our willingness to choose to utilize some of the time we have to talk to our Creator. Hybels addresses this issue in several chapters in the book.

I give this book a full 5.0 out of 5.0 rating and highly recommend it to all my Christian friends. It is really eye-opening and helpful to lay out the strategy of spending more time each day with God. I, myself, am going to employ some of the lessons in my own prayer life. I hope you read it and experience the same conviction I did to increase your time spent with God.

Publisher’s Description:

Too Busy Not to Pray
by Bill Hybels

For over two decades Too Busy Not to Pray has stood as a classic on prayer, helping Christians all over the world slow down to draw near to God. During those years, the world certainly hasn’t slowed down. If anything, the pace, intensity and number of distractions have only increased. The urgent need for prayer is clear, but busyness still keeps many of us from finding time to pray.  Too Busy Not to Pray calls both young and old to make prayer a priority, and broadens our vision for what our eternal, powerful God does when his people slow down to pray.
