We encourage you to see the movie Indivisible for several reasons. One reason is that we like to support Christian films in general. We like to send a message to filmmakers that there is a market for clean faith-based films. But secondly, and more importantly, is this is a really good movie.

Christian films, in my opinion, are getting better and better. I’ll admit some of the first ones we watched, while they presented a great message, were a bit on the cheesy side with less than stellar acting performances. A lot of the reason for that was that the actors and actresses were only volunteers (unpaid and inexperienced) and the films were made with a low budget. As these filmmakers are seeing successes, increasing their budgets and skills, they are putting out better and more quality entertainment experiences, as well as the important message. The more we support this industry, the better I think the end products will become.

Indivisible is based on the true story of an Army chaplain (Darren Turner played by Justin Bruening) who receives orders to deploy to Iraq for 15 months shortly after completing basic training. He leaves behind his wife (Heather Turner played by Sarah Drew) and their three young children. Both Justin Bruening and Sarah Drew, as well as another actor in the movie (Jason Goerge), were members of the Grey’s Anatomy cast. I have never watched Grey’s Anatomy but thought that might be worth mentioning to show you that the movie has “real” actors.

The movie depicts the struggles of both Darren as he is deployed to serve as a base chaplain (along with some of his new neighbors that were deployed with him), and Heather back home, tending to the needs of their children while also serving the military families left behind. Both face situations that place a strain on their marriage. The story continues after Darren returns home a changed man and struggles to regain the happy marriage that he had prior to the deployment.

The movie is rated PG-13 for “some thematic material and war violence.” The thematic elements include death, PTSD and heated domestic arguments. It is an emotional movie and brought me to tears more than once.

I left the theater with an even greater appreciation of the sacrifices that our military personnel and their families make. The stresses on their families go far beyond what is experienced on the battlefield. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars for good Christian entertainment.
