We were privileged to see a pre-release viewing of this movie back in April. It was well worth the one-hour drive on a weeknight!

This movie is the sixth produced by Alex and Steven Kendrick. Here’s a short summary of the first five:

Flywheel – (2003) A dishonest used car salesman in lots of debt comes to know God and decides to become the salesman that God wants him to be, turning from his dishonest way of business and trusting God to take care of him.

Facing the Giants – (2006) A losing Christian high school coach with an underdog football team relies on his faith to face his giants of fear and failure on and off the field.

Fireproof – (2008) A firefighter’s marriage is in crisis when his father proposes that he try “The Love Dare” in an attempt to save his marriage.

Courageous – (2011) Four police officers that face dangers every day, encounter tragedy close to home and struggle with their faith. Together they make a decision which impacts their roles as husbands and fathers.

War Room – (2015) A seemingly perfect family that looks like they have it all on the outside, when in reality their marriage has become a war zone. With guidance from an older, wiser woman, the wife discovers she can start fighting for her family with prayer.

In my opinion, these movies just keep getting better and better, with Overcomer being the best yet. While they are all good, especially when it comes to the theology and strong biblical message, the acting in the first few was a bit cheesy. But then, they were made on a shoestring budget with unpaid novice actors.

Overcomer is all about finding your identity in Christ and is based on the first couple of chapters in Ephesians. It is a good mix of heart-felt serious moments and light-hearted comedy. You’ll want to take a tissue in case you get something in your eyes like I did! Wink wink.

The storyline of this movie is a basketball coach who is all setup to have a great winning year when the town’s biggest industry shuts down and his top players move away, crushing his dreams of a state championship. He is coerced into coaching cross-country track by the school principal where only one person tries out for the team, and she has asthma!

I don’t want to tell you too much and reveal any spoilers. I’ll just say that the best part for me was the motivational speech during the final cross-country race. I thought that was absolutely genius.

One of the brothers that produced the movie, Alex Kendrick, is the main character (as he is in several of their movies) and the other brother, Steven Kendrick, has a bit role. If you’ve seen other Christian movies in the past few years you’ll probably recognize several of the actors including Ben Davies (War Room and Courageous), Priscilla C. Shirer (I Can Only Imagine and War Room), and Elizabeth Becka (War Room and Like Arrows).

I give this movie a full 5.0 out of 5.0. It is good entertainment and moves at a good pace. It kept my attention the whole time. But more importantly, it carries a good message of knowing who you are in Christ and the importance of forgiveness.

Our Affiliate Partner Christianbook Distributors carries the movie (DVD, Blu-ray and digital) as well as the Overcomer book in hardcover, paperback and in Spanish formats. They also have a DVD Bible Study Kit and Workbook based on the movie along with the movie Soundtrack.
