Last weekend we watched the movie God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness. This is the third God’s Not Dead movie produced by Pure Flix Entertainment.

The first God’s Not Dead movie came out in 2014. It was about a Christian college freshman who had an atheist philosophy professor (played by Kevin Sorbo of “Hercules” fame). The Christian student and the atheist professor have a debate in which the student must prove that God is alive in order to pass the class.  Willie and Korie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty” make a guest appearance.

The second movie, God’s Not Dead 2, came out in 2016. In this movie, a high school history teacher is asked a question about Jesus during class, and her response lands her in legal trouble. This movie has bit parts played by several big names including Pat Boone, Sadie Robertson, and Mike Huckabee.

God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness, although they chose not to title it God’s Not Dead 3, is the third movie to come out in the series. It came out this year (2018). The same actor who played Pastor Dave in the first two movies, returns this time in the same role, and as the main character. It is rated PG for “thematic elements including some violence and suggestive material.” There are some short scenes of violence (fistfight, shoving, etc.), mob protesting, vandalism, a deadly fire, implied alcoholic drinking, and a few romantic kisses.

The storyline is about the debate if Pastor Dave’s church should remain on a public college campus. The church is destroyed by a fire, and the leaders of the university decide that a new student union should be built on that land instead of rebuilding the church. Pastor Dave struggles with that decision and goes head to head with the president of the University who also happens to be his friend. Some of the students are wrestling with their own belief in the existence of God, and the battle over whether the church stays or goes causes division on campus.

There are also side stories of a possible romantic interest of Pastor Dave and a rift between the pastor and his brother. We recognized the actor who plays his brother but it took us a while to figure out that it is John Corbett, who starred as the male lead opposite Nia Vardalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I was a little concerned with the direction of the movie (for reasons I won’t divulge so I don’t spoil it for you) but was pleased with the way everything plays out in the end. It is a movie about seeking God, pride, and reconciliation. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for good Christian entertainment.

You can purchase all three of the movies in this series from our Affiliate Partner Christianbook Distributors. They also have student study kits that are based on the movies. These kits are geared toward students and challenge them to discover what they believe and provide them with a firm foundation on which to defend their faith.
