We went to see the movie Run the Race this past weekend. This faith-based drama was produced by the former University of Florida football star Tim Tebow and his older brother Robby. We like to support faith-based films and since we are Tim Tebow fans and David is a football enthusiast, seeing this movie was a must for us.

The storyline is about two teenage athletic brothers who lost their mother to cancer and were abandoned by their alcoholic father. They live modestly in a small town which they long to escape. One brother has kept the faith in Christ that their mother introduced them to before she died. The other brother struggles with his faith, questioning God’s providence and ability to answer prayers.

The movie shows the love and bond between the two brothers and their pursuit to obtain a college scholarship as their ticket out of their current situation. Attending the University of Florida is the goal of the boys, and the promotion of that school in the movie came as no surprise due to the Tebow connection.

The brothers face physical and emotional trials and one brother has a love interest. The film is rated PG and is listed as running 1 hour and 34 minutes. I found the acting by the main actors to be pretty good. In particular, the relationship between the one brother (Zach Truett played by Tanner Stine) and his love interest (Ginger played by Kelsey Reinhardt) felt very natural and enduring (maybe there really were sparks behind the scenes?).

VRBO

The film stars some seasoned actors. Frances Fisher (Rose’s mother in “Titanic”) plays the boys Godmother and employer. Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from “Forrest Gump”) plays the boy’s high school coach. Tim himself has a cameo appearance in the movie.

The story kept our interest the entire time and there were a few unexpected events (which is a good thing, I don’t like movies where everything happens exactly as I expect from the beginning without any twists or surprises). However, there were some scenes that we felt needed more coverage. Without spoiling the ending for you, we feel it was rushed at the end and more time should have been devoted to elaborate on an important event. All-in-all we feel it was a fairly good movie with an entertaining plot that emphasized the importance of knowing God. Together we give it a 4.0 out of 5.0 and recommend you support it.
