Book Review: Eli by Bill Myers

It has probably been a good 15 years since I have read a novel. I tend to stay away from them, probably because they typically don’t add any value to learning that I get from theology and science books. However, a friend of mine gave me this book and thought that I may enjoy it. He gave it to me almost a year ago which tells you my take on novels!

Bill Myers is a #1 best-selling author, known for works such as Threshold and Fire of Heaven as well as several children series including My Life as and McGee and Me!. He’s a prolific writer, skilled in keeping his readers captivated and engaged in his works. This book is no exception. I must give you a warning, it’s hard to put down!

What makes this book intriguing is its plot. It sort of answers the question, “What if Jesus had come during our lifetime instead of 2000 years ago?” I say sort of because no one really knows, but Myers opens our eyes to what may have happened. This book will leave you both stimulated and captivated as you ponder the various what-ifs.

Myers starts off with a simple, yet huge disclaimer: This is fiction! I could tell from the beginning he did not want to be criticized for any form of blasphemy that may arise from reading this book. The reader has to keep that in mind as the plot unfolds.

Without giving away too much, Eli is the fictional Jesus who enters the modern world as we know it. The main character, Conrad, is a non-believing skeptical news producer caught up in his pursuit of wealth, fame and power. As you can probably deduce, all that changes in his life when he’s introduced to Eli. Throughout his transformation his life is meshed with family and friends, each having relationships to either mend or build upon. What is appealing and captivating is the methods, circumstances and events Conrad must endure that contribute to his transformation.

In my opinion, Myers is worthy of being a #1 best-selling author. He certainly has a colorful way of writing. His words make it easy for the imagination to follow as if this were a movie script. In addition to his easy-to-read style of writing, he sprinkles it with solid theology of the death, burial and resurrection of the real Jesus Christ that has the capacity to lead a non-believing reader to the cross. It is that exquisite quality of writing that I enjoyed in this book. Although I’m not generally a fan of novels, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one (I read it in 3 days!) and highly recommend it. A definite 5 out of 5 for sure.
